Xhingyu Chen is a published author, independent art critic, and contemporary art specialist.
Xhingyu was born in Changsha, Hunan and moved to New York City when she was a toddler. She graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont where she majored in Studio Art. She has worked for museums and galleries in New York City, including an internship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She moved to Shanghai in early 2002, working for several galleries before joining the team at BizArt Art Center in early 2004. During her time there, she managed the artist-in-residency program, Artist Links, a project under the Cultural & Educational Sector of the British Council, and helped develop international programs. She left BizArt in late 2005 to work independently as an arts journalist and contemporary art tour guide. She was a contributing writer for the International Herald Tribune, Art Asia Pacific, Yishu Journal, Nukta Art, and Sculpture Magazine. She was formerly the Art Editor for Time Out Shanghai and the Shanghai correspondent for ArtInfo. Her first book, Chinese Artists: New Media 1990 - 2010, was published in 2011.
Xhingyu moved back to New York City in 2016 with her family. A few years later, she embarked on her project of documenting all of the commissioned artwork in the New York City subway under the MTA Arts & Design project. You can follow her progress on Instagram. This led to her second book, Museum in Transit: 10 Contemporary Artists in the NYC Subway, which will be released June 28, 2026.
She currently lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.
